This past holiday season Tanker Tots participated in a project that was truly incredible. I had yet to share this story on our blog and thought it was appropriate for Independence Day. We thank all the service men, women, and dogs for all that they do to ensure our freedom!
I belong to the Forest Lions Club and we decided to put together War Dog Boxes that would arrive for the holidays. Ten active duty handlers and their service dogs that were stationed all around the world received care packages. Two boxes went to each team; one for the handler, and one for the dog.
Handlers received many items from their wish list: snacks, gum, gatorade mix, socks, games, and personal care items. The war dogs received items that would be hard to find overseas and help them cope with tough environments: doggles (dog goggles to protect their eyes), treat ball, rope toy, cooling mat, collapsible water bowl, comb, and TANKER TOTS!
It is such an honor to have our treats be shipped all around the world to make the day of a hard working military dog. I made sure to include a letter which thanked the teams for their service.
We were lucky enough to hear back from one of the handlers. The most amazing coincidence was that this soldier called Lynchburg home!! He graduated from a local high school and has family in the area. Getting a 'thank you' from him via facebook and seeing that we helped a local young man that was thousands of miles away in the middle east on active duty....just incredible. Thank you for your service to our country Trooper Johnson!
